What does a boilermaker do?

Boilers, tanks, and vats are used to store liquid and gas at high temperatures and pressure. Boilermakers work with heavy structural steel to fabricate, assemble, install and repair boilers and a wide variety of other fabricated metal products.
They work across a range of industries, including construction, oil and gas, power generation and shipbuilding.

A Boilermaker apprenticeship teaches you all about working with metal and how to use the tools for the trade.
Under the supervision of qualified tradespeople, you will learn how to:
- Interpret technical drawings
- Finish structural welding to standards
- Use basic power tools and hand tools
- Weld and cut metal

After finishing your four-year apprenticeship, including your Certificate III in Engineering - Fabrication Trade (Boilermaking), you will be qualified to work as a Boilermaker.
Once you’ve gained some experience, you can specialise in different areas.
Certificate II refers to a nationally recognised qualification that prepares you for the workplace or academic studies. While it’s not required, it may help you to prepare for a Certificate III.
