What does a plumber do?
Plumbers install, repair and maintain critical water, drainage, gas and sewerage piping and systems.
As a plumber, no two days will be the same. In a typical day you could be:
- Using specialised equipment to unblock pipes
- Installing water-based fire protection equipment like hydrants, hose reels and sprinklers
- Connecting gas appliances and services
- On the roof, installing coverings and drainage systems
- Laying and joining hydraulic services
- Using drawings to figure out where the plumbing's going and what materials are needed for the job

After finishing your four-year apprenticeship including your Certificate III in Plumbing, you’ll be qualified to work as a plumber and gas fitter. Once you’ve gained some experience, you can specialise in different areas.

Certificate II refers to a nationally recognised qualification that prepares you for the workplace or academic studies. While it’s not required, it may help you to prepare for a Certificate III.
